Sometimes in our South West corner of Britain, we have what we call ‘the San Fransisco effect’. Basically, the cold air from the sea hits the warm air of the land causing fog. That week, we had had a lot of heat. Throw into that mix the River Tamar, clear skies, lights winds . . . and the fog beginning to drift down the sides hemmed in by the rolling hills of Devon. From experience, we hoped that there would be an incredible light in Royal William Yard as the sun was setting so . . . grabbing our camera equipment . . . !!!

It’s funny how we didn’t really talk about where we were going. I suppose after living in the Yard for over 7 years, you get an instinct for where would be best . . . yet, the conditions were changing all the time; what would be a picture one minute, had gone the next. It was enough. We turned to head back taking one last shot of Melville – the lights had come on and its ‘finery’ reflected back at us. Time to put the kettle on for a cuppa . . .
